This time I feel totally excused not to agree with you Joe - it fits into the overall concept pretty well:W

Thank you. I have a new bass and I thought I'd be able to dial it in to be punchy like the old bass, I haven't been able to do it yet, but I'm trying. Thanks for the kind words!! :-)

I know what you mean, the old one had this special "kick". It is great that instruments have their soul. I have been making friends with my new Fender Strat for several months. I hope you fine-tune everything with your new bass faster than I did with my guitar :)

I agree with the others. We are our worst critic.Your bass works perfect. Every time I record my guitar when I play it back I hate the tone, how I mixed it, the lack of ideas and wonder if I'll ever learn to play this damn guitar thing...lol:)

I got a ridiculously awesome new bass with an endorsement, it's an amazing piece of art - playing it at the vendor it was amazing, recording, it's got ZERO punch. I gave up an ErnieBall endorsement for Warrior, thought this bass would translate for recording and it's weak by comparison. Breaks my heart - it's a custom made $12k absolutely one of it's kind bass - seems to record like shit. I'm not at all having fun dialing it in.

Well endorsements are basically you tell everyone how well the product serves you.And you are.
I actually understand your dilemma. I really do.
Based on your reply above you stated this is a "Warrior" bass? Warrior Instruments in Georgia?
Can you show them this and ask for suggestions or maybe swap for a bass with more MM style heavy magnet pickups?
I believe MM pickups have big heavy magnets but could be wrong.
Bring it up to them. Explain that about exposure on home recording/jam websites and your needing help getting what the MM delivered.
If they are handing you a $12 k bass then you should sound like one.
Back when I was "Relativity" around here I did a few tracks with a $12k Alembic. The results were a yawn.
I used a brass nut on a Epiphone Thunderbird and that sounded more $12k Alembic than the actual Alembic.Everyone wanted to know how I got that sound. Go figure.
I would talk to them and also figure out what made the MM sound so good. I bet it was the heavier magnets.
Nut material and pickups are definitley the first things to look at. But dont be shy pointing all this out to them and being honest. See how well they work with you.
Was the MM analog and this bass Active? If both are analog you may have had different value tone capacitors you are used to.
MMs are up there with the “most recorded studio basses “. Their pickups and electronics like the tone caps are proven. If you have Bartolinis those are proven live concert pickups but recording they are tame.
I’d work with Warrior.
Also if you are playing thru active and it’s a 18v preamp that’s a lot of the problem as they add too much headroom . +1

You're right on every level. My former MM only made the sound it did because of a specific pick-up config with a double humbucker and a jazz combined, both ceramic bottom with wide posts. I haven't pulled off the covers yet to see if they're actually bartolinis, but in the showroom, this bass was a monster! Recording doesn't come near what I heard playing it live. I appreciate the family relationship, but this bass just isn't doing it's job, kind of frustrating and sad at the same time. it plays like melted butter in your hands, it's a gorgeous to look at, absolutely one-of-one bass, but man - it sounds like duck farts on tape. Thanks for the emotional support, I love your Relativity works by the way. I have a folder full of them.

Thank you frank, just fighting to get the old tone out of the new bass. A week now with it and I'm not even close, it's very frustrating.
