The Phone Call
I didn’t pick up the phone. I was too busy watching a program. Netflix had urged me to watch Yellowstone, so I let the phone ring and ring.
And then it was too late. The following morning I found out she was dead. I should have picked up the phone.

The Media
The newspaper sits by my side, the temptress inviting me to fondle her pages. Her headlines are so seductive.
“Read me. You know you want to.”
She always does this, flirting with flashy headlines.
As so I do, knowing that she will never change.
She’s always been a good liar.

The Cut
Slowly, the incision traveled south from her cheekbone to her jaw. Years of sun damage had taken its toll and now it was time to excise her sins.
“Will I have a scar?”
The surgeon was too quiet as he attached the Steri-Strips.
His silent frown told the ugly truth.

Christmas Morning
My older brother lumbered through the front door cradling a large cardboard box, a Christmas morning surprise.
Inside the container was a small charcoal colored puppy. My twin sister and I could not hide our glee.
My mother scowled from the couch, knowing that she had another mouth to feed.

The In-Laws
Difficult in-laws…they come with every family. And they all have one thing in common. You’re not good enough.
Like a salmon trying to swim upstream, it is very difficult succeed with these types of people. You will always fail.
You will never be adequate, no matter how hard you try.
