Hey folks,

Today I've rolled out the new "wikiloops live" panel for logged in members,
and I'd love to get to read your first impressions and feedback if you care to share them!
Whatever questions, criticism, praise or great ideas for future improvements cross your mind, this is the place to let me know, so we can continue to improve wikiloops the way YOU like it.

Thanks for sharing your feedback!

Looks nice :) First impression: that mouse over effect on the tracks is really cool...

I found it fascinating (once I realised what it was) and then I got hooked on watching what would come up next. It's a little scary to think that a listener in Guadaloupe is visible to all as they play Exhaustion!
It feels like being caught on camera as you pick your nose in Aldi :o However it was nice to see thumbs up passing though for my latest upload...
It moves very quickly, like playing Whac-A-Mole, I want to freeze it sometimes.
I feel the novelty might wear off but I do appreciate the work (and fun) involved...

seems cool to me, although i wish i could expand both the 'live' and 'shoutbox' together...i have the monitor real estate to fit it all on the screen.

Thanks for stating that, that aspect is exactly why I am asking for your feedback here.
The widget does indeed expose what people are up to in a new way, and should anyone feel "er, I rather not give a thumbs up on any track before that shows up in the live widget", then we should reconsider if this really is a great idea.
I have tried to find a balance in what shows up in the live widget and what can be matched to "oh, that was user X". Sure, if you are the only member from vatican city, then that's easy to resolve for those who know the community, but for the majority of displayed activity, I felt breaking it down to countries gives enough privacy to all... you tell me if that's okay or feels creepy, and I'll adjust.

I'll hold back and wait a little longer before stating my personal impression and motives behind the live panel.

Let me rather ask a few questions to nail down what else I'd like to know, which all align with the "how does this feel" aspect. I'm happy to see things seem to work technically (I heard you, rootshell), and for the positive feedback on these mouse-over bubbles so far, but I am wondering:

How do you read the offered insight, be it the 24h-stats or the mix of countries, or the spread of different activities?
Some of that information has not been this public in the past, so, did any of that feel surprising, or different to what you had imagined?
Did it change your impression of how big/active wikiloops is, and in which direction?
Is there any activity type or stat you feel is missing to complete the picture?

Thank you for sharing your impressions :)

I think the content of the widget is fine. Any more info or more detailed breakdowns would just be a distraction. What it does is that it gives you an impression that there`s always acticity on WL - which I think is a message even worth displaying on the main page.

The really high-end solution would be to have this widget as a standalone app that I could permanently have on my screen.

I think it shows "activity" overall, which is great. Maybe might offer a starting point for a member looking to jam on a track or something. The showing of the country doesn't bother me. I know about IP addresses, WHOIS lookups, etc so that's just normal stuff, but I can see where someone might feel "watched". Unless you're from a country with a population of 1, that's not a big deal to me :) The fact that I can message (send a message feature to) myself is probably what I find more alarming. It has me thinking, what kind of conversation could I have with myself? :o:D Will I finally get those answers I've been looking for????

Dick, you have presented us with quite a game here :D Those among us who like to know what's going on, now have ways to do some detective work (if we're nosy and/or totally bored)
It's possible without too much investigation to see when people are 'skipping' through songs. You can in some cases match up who is online and who is listening to what... Are they playing themselves many times, are they liking stuff they've hardly listened to! But I'm just playing Devil's advocate here so pardon my unlikely suggestions. I doubt anyone would care or try to abuse the system, but stuff is available where it was once hidden as you say.
The Live aspect reminds me of BandCamp where live purchases flashed up. Also new subscriptions at wikiloops of course :)
Not seeing much activity other than plays today, it would be quite nice to read live comments that might tempt us to listen.... but your site is bursting at the seems already so unless you scrap another feature we will have to put our specs on and linger in the right hand column. I <3 looping :)

I once owned a postcard saying: "A good self-conversation requires an intelligent conversation partner", with a painting of a guy sitting in front of a mirror ;)
Good catch & fixed, thanks for the hint.

Again, very well observed! I added a filter for "user listens to own track" to keep these off the widget. People checking their own tracks to catch up with comments or to peek at the stats are now exempt from the public activity log, as they are not necessarily "listeners" in that sense. Rumors have it some people even give thumbs up on their own tracks, that is also not going to surface if the myth should turn out to be true ;)

p.s.
No mySounds, just no :P

Aw, c'mon Dick you can't object to someone giving themselves a reward for a job well done! ;)

The live widget seems very cool for me! I was just thinking about more than five line items for larger screens .
The „send message“ link in the active members mouseover is great, it saves clicks if you want to sent a PM to a fellow musician that’s currently logged in 👍🏻

I'll be pushing some smaller changes soon, including the option to open both panels on large screens. Thank you all for you feedback, and keep it coming if anything odd comes up :)

I'd prefer not to get emails about comments on tracks.

I rely on emails about remixes of tracks, so I don't miss someone's work on a track and I can respond.

Is there a way to shut off comment emails and keep remix notification emails??

:D

I think the new widget is interesting in that it dramatically highlights the fact that the currently active musicians here are from all over the world, which is amazing and always gives me pause.

I agree with rootshell that it should be possible to have the "live" widget and the Shoutbox both open at the same time. You could grab the screen height and then have it dynamically toggle between the two widgets as you do now if there is not enough height, but if there is, you could allow them to both be open at the same time.

It would also be fun to see how many new mixes were uploaded in the past 24 hours, unless that is what you mean by "tracks shared".

But it looks great, Dick, thanks for your labors of love to keep this remarkable platform of yours going strong!
