The Night Watch Man

This is a poem I wrote which I never made into a song. I have recited it and could do again if some appropriate music could back it. Or if someone fancies being a vocal for it.

The Night Watch Man.

While all the world is sleeping
the Night Watch Man is peeping
into windows where the innocent will never meet his eyes

While all the world is sleeping
the Night Watch Man is creeping
into gardens, hides in bushes long before the good arise

His face is always hidden
his activities forbidden
but if you should encounter him
'tis like the Devil's ridden
cross your path

His manner is suspicious
his appetite capricious
for unsuspecting victims who would
make a meal delicious
and he'd laugh

For he eats with his eyes
devours with his soul
no way to disguise
like diamonds in coal

He's feared of the day
needs minimal light
he'll happily stay
in the shadows of night

While all the world is sleeping
this furtive cat is leaping
into alleyways and hideaways
focusing on prey

While all the world's safekeeping
the Night Watch Man is sweeping
through cloisters of perversity
that's all that I can say

For he's looking at me through a hole in the fence
I'm feeling his glare but it wouldn't make sense
to expose this pursuer with nocturnal plan
so I won't meet the eyes of the Night Watch Man
