Today we got
the phone call,
dawn’s early bad news,
a sister’s heart attack
close to death
which way will she choose?

Everything now
in slow motion,
like trying to
paddle through mud,
life in suspension,
which way will it go?

As we wait,
for more news,
so many emotion,
grief, guilt, relief,
all the things that transpire
will she expire,
will she live?

Death looking down on her,
is it a smile or frown
and deciding
which way she should go
up or down.

Take her or leave her,
so many things
we don't know.

The telephone
holding its breath,
the silence so slow
what will the next ring bring?

Wondering what we can handle
when there’s been family strife
in the family so long
affecting her life.

An open wound that doesn't heal,
hearts ripped and torn
arguments that can't be repealed
so much family scorn.

What will happen?
What will change?
Did she deserve it?

As we are left
with those emotions
that remain.
