Jamming this was crazy fun. It's like this: the drums are chasing me and I'm running away...at the 3:00 section you can hear me turning corners and trying to evade you. Listen in that context. At 3:32 I give up and you caught me.

In music, a ghost note is a musical note with a rhythmic value, but no discernible pitch when played. In musical notation, this is represented by an "X" for a note head instead of an oval, or parentheses around the note head.[1] It should not be confused with the X-shaped notation (double sharp) that raises a note to a double sharp.
On stringed instruments, this is played by sounding a muted string. "Muted to the point where it is more percussive sounding than obvious and clear in pitch. There is a pitch, to be sure, but its musical value is more rhythmic than melodic or harmonic...they add momentum and drive to any bass line."[2] Occurring in a rhythmic figure, they are purposely deemphasized, often to the point of near silence. In popular music drumming, ghost notes are ones played "very softly between the 'main' notes," (off the beat on the sixteenth notes) most often on the snare drum in a drum kit.[3] Ghost notes are often used by electric bass players and double bass players in a range of popular music and traditional music styles. In vocal music, this style of notation represents words that are spoken in rhythm rather than sung.

In this track I hear some of it in the first 30 seconds or so and mixed throughout.
I also look at like a drummer where you downplay or soften the main hits / beat or even negate it to create some tension, etc....usually a feel thing that is not conscious but felt when needed, etc...
I think that effect you use a lot ( that phaser'ish sound) also plays into it somehow....either way it is very cool :W +0

Wow thanks for all this. I'll check out the first 30 and see if I can find it. My guess is once I identify what exactly you're referring to, I'll understand, and then know that those are called ghost notes!

Probably one of those thing we all do and don't know we do until someone comes along notices it and calls it by some name. I dont know 3/4 of what I play is in any formal musical sense.
At the end of the day it really doesnt matter, just play what you play and have some enjoyment doing it;) +0
