The leaves gather on the tree, their  brown bodies huddling together to fend off the impending storm.

One of them is left alone at the end of the branch. His friends have already fallen, gathering on the ground below to wait.

The stiff wind escalates, pointing its icy fingers toward the lone leaf. With his  thin arm, he tries to hold onto the stem-surely it’s not his time yet.

The winds yank him from the tree. Once again they have won as they cackle, whistle and volley him through the air.

He scrambles, pitching to and fro, trying to stay afloat, but it’s too late.
The winds laugh, exhale and leave to go about their business, as his crinkled body finally falls to join his friends on the ground below.

They are happy with his arrival.

The Babbling Brook

You keep talking, your voice gurgling like a babbling brook, the water sloshing over the boulders again and again, but saying nothing.

I know if I let my mind wander, you won’t notice, my thoughts so very far away from your watered words, thinking of things beyond the white noise of your mouth.

As I refocus on your face, pretending to listen, I hear the same topics come back again from a few minutes ago, the phrases talking to themselves like they are new ideas, so profound, as if they haven’t been heard before.

But it’s just a recycle, the churning water regurgitating against itself, spilling over my smooth deaf ears, and heard by no one.
