Behind the gated walls
There are white dogs everywhere.

They are small and well-behaved.
They don’t lunge, complain, or disobey.
They have food in their bellies every day,
And go on walks at 8 and 2 pm.

Trotting along,
They keep their faces focused forward,
Looking neither right nor left,
With their owners tightly leashed
Behind them.

Outside the gated walls,
Other dogs play
At the nearby park,
A stew of breeds…

Some with
Mottled fur,
Larger snouts,
Short legs, tall tails,
A quilt of many colors.

They mix together like
A pack of cards.

Today, one has wandered
Inside the gated walls.
He is a bit unruly,
Happily barking
With his deep voice
And his untamed fur
So wild and free.

He doesn't know
That he is different
From the other dogs here,
That he doesn’t fit in,
After all,
He's just a dog.

There is a Maltese up the road
Who seems friendly,
Barking and pulling on her leash
To get closer.

She has taken a liking to him,
And his untamed ways,
But her owner pulls her
Tightly to her side.

She cannot have her
Purebred dog
Mixing with this mongrel
It just isn't right.

The puppies won't be white,
And that’s a problem.
