This is cool man and smart. Singing this kind of material regularly even if it's just along with an album at home or in the car will train your voice and reward you with control faster than you ever thought possible. I think you're onto something here. The best singers in the world developed their skills singing gospel.

I pretty much don't know what the hell I'm doing just trying out a style
but yeah, I can imagine it would train vox for sure, lots of pitch changes or vocal note slides, which are hard for me. thx Ron, really appreciate the perspective
