The afternoon was barren,
A yard filled with
A boring palette of personalities
Vacant faces ripe with the wanting…

I looked ahead,
At a cigarette waving from across the patio
Tough broad at its end,
Sneering, sizing me,
Like a deer in the crosshairs,
Fresh meat for her freezer
For long winters ahead

Another looked at me like
I was hot cake from the oven
She sauntered over
My aroma making her moist
As she imagined my icing.

I got up and looked around
And then there was another,
I’d been warned,
I was told
She’d be perfect,
But I didn’t believe in perfection anymore
My heart had become a desert,
Where even a cactus would die.

And then I saw her
A complexion like latte,
Her hair the softest wheat.
And her smile as wide as a freeway.

The words flowed freely
An exchange like the tide,
Waters receeding
Then coming forth,
A play of waves ebbing
And crashing on the shores.
Sharing the sands of stories told

A union was formed
Two mollusks hugging
Holding on for years
And longer
Against the angry skies
The darkest moons
The rising tides
And great monsoons
