You know I’ve left my city
With my friends and classes too
To come down south and help my mate
Taking care of her mother Sue

The lady is a bunch of fun
Likes to sing and dance
Like a retired nun

We often do the standards
Singing Frank and Ella too
This lady knows all of the songs
Her memory is sharp and true

If I don’t know a composer’s name
She fills it in and I’m ashamed

She once sang on the radio
With her sisters by her side
They crooned all through the night and day
Until they had to hide

But then a man soon came along
Her singing days were pretty much gone

But music was still firm in her heart
She sings with joy and glee
The music taking her way back
To when her life was free

We learn so much from these older folks
Though we often make them the butt of our jokes

I hope that when I’m almost gone
Youngsters will take pity on me
Bringing me into their world of fun
And bringing a bit of glee

But ‘til then I’ll help old Sue
Belt out those songs
So rare and true!
