Your thinking is right slin no doubt about it! but let me explain:I had no separate track of your voice, I had a track with your voice and 2 guitars already hot recorded, one on the far left and one on the far right. So if I pull up that slider of that track in the mix, the 2 guitars would follow, which meant too much guitars in comparison to the other instruments there where in that other track I had(voice,2 guitars(doubled then), drums and violin),so I had to pull down the track with your voice and the guitars. so your voice drowned in that wall of sound because when I mixed in that track with: your voice the 2 guitars, the violin,(already prominent in that mix) and the drums (with an already prominent bass drum,the SD and HH and the violin where nowhere to be heard cause this way I doubled your voice and the 2 guitars again, but not the violin! .luckily I had a separate track of the drums but then again the drums where doubled but not the violin! so the violin disappeared in the mix.poor Jypeka :) …in other words: you can’t make a mix when you haven’t all separate tracks off all instruments. When you have all separate stems you have not only control of the volume of each instrument, but the sound color as well and the flexibility to put them somewhere in the 180° stereo field which, because of the headroom it creates, would make the mix more transparent and clear.
