Welcome to the 1960 (pre Beatles) lonely hearts club. Sure wish you could play a chromatic scale as you've got great feel happening.

Theory isn't at all necessary. Having a chromatic instrument would allow you to play all the time with all the chords/sales that others are playing. You have a great ear and can hear where music is going. It's just unfortunate that you're often playing tones that don't fit, but are a close as you can get. When playing with others, it's not always about what's good for us, it's what's good for the music. Old saying: being "close" to your target works well enough for atomic weapons, for everything else a bit more accuracy is desirable.
