Long nights

Why is it when you’re younger,
Bad things find their way in,
You learn to lock the door tight,
Hide the truth under your skin.
You try to block the memories,
Pretend you’re doing fine,
You’re scared to tell a soul
What’s living in your mind.

You smile like nothing’s wrong,
Play strong, play brave, stay still,
But silence has a way
Of teaching pain to wait.

Then you get older and it hits
Like a ton of bricks at night,
All the things you buried deep
Come back into the light.
You’ve got trust issues, heavy truths,
A weight you never chose,
Carrying the echoes
Of what nobody knows.

You dream about it over and over
Sleep won’t let you rest,
Your heart is always racing,
Fear sitting in your chest.
Every shadow feels alive,
Every sound feels too close,
You think of that spider,
The web you can’t outgrow.

You tell yourself you’re safe now,
But your body doesn’t know,
It learned a different lesson
A long, long time ago.

Cause you get older and it hits
Like a ton of bricks inside,
All the scars you tried to hide
Refuse to stay quiet.

It wasn’t your fault.
You were just a child.
