I don't like ranking musicians, it's a futile exercise as there no way to measure it. What do you compare, do you give out points for virtuosity? Or popularity? Notoriety? A good example how useless these list are is good old Roger Waters. Many of the Pink Floyd recordings were actually played by David Gilmour.

Here is from an interview with David Gilmour: https://pfco.neptunepinkfloyd.co.uk/band/interviews/djg/djg92.html#:~:text=He%20was%20never%20very%20keen,recorded%20output%20is%20me%20anyway.

"...CD: Was Roger an effective bassist back then?
DG: He had developed his own limited, or very simple style. He was never very keen on improving himself as a bass player and half the time I would play bass on the records because I would tend to do it quicker. Right back to those early records; I mean, at least half the bass on all recorded output is me anyway.
CD: This is not a widely acknowledged fact.
DG: Well, I think it's been said, but it's certainly not something we go around advertising.

Rog used to come in and say, "Thank you very much" to me once in a while for winning him bass- playing polls...." :o

So he might have been a very good lyrics writer, but bass player? I think Ernie here is better than him (plus Ernie is a better human being, too ;)

So sorry to say this, but having Roger in this list just shows that these are just popularity lists of famous names. I'm out B)

Of course this matter is quite subjective and many factors are affecting final opinion. Fact that Roger is long years with Pink Floyd and a part of bass player is also lyricist and song writer. I trust David Gillmor opinion but there may be other factors also and for sure political differences and disputes. Agree that to systemize players is difficult and subjective matter.
