The owl flies south,
Through the haze above the river,
An old man watches gravely,
From the croft upon the bend,
He cries aloud,
For it's written in the folklore:
"When the owls leave the valley,
Then the days of man will end."
He grips his staff,
As he treads toward the village,
The nettles rake his body,
And the thorns claw at his feet.
He finds it bare,
Save for all the twisted corpses,
Of the sinful and the foolish,
Lying rotting in the street.
The ruined barn,
Wherein once the owls were nesting,
Stands in quiet condemnation,
Of the people and their greed.
Some unknown hand,
Had inscribed "dear gods please help us!"
On the front wall of the temple—
Words no god would ever heed.
The day grows dark,
As the clouds proclaim their warning.
He hears the sound of horses,
And knows well the reason why.
He lifts his gaze,
Up toward the wrathful heavens,
Preparing for the coming,
Of the riders from the sky.
