You probably have a warped neck.
On modern guitars this is a 5 minute fix. On older guitars it could be bigger problem.

I looked up 1950s Levins and they sometimes DO NOT have an easy way to straighten a neck called a truss rod.Levins DID NOT have adjustable truss rods until the 60's.
While this is normal when a guitar sits for a long time, on older guitars without a truss rod, it is a bigger problem when the neck starts curving. But if you cannot adjust warp out of neck AND DO NOT HAVE A TRUSS ROD.... You will have to take it to a professional to restraighten the neck.

Other then truss rod, it could also be the nut at the top. Dirt, Chipped , worn...etc....

TO CHECK IF YOUR NECK IS BOWED:
8th fret should have spring about same thickness as a paper business card.

BAD:

Also check the nut at the top of guitar. Is it chipped, cracked, dirty, broken? Clean with a toothbrush.

Beautiful guitar! I would take to a professional. It is worth it.
That guitar has a history and sentimental value.

Yes, take it to a pro, let him have a look and then he can give you an estimate. Sometimes it's not viable financially for repairing - like what happened to my beloved acoustic guitar. To fix it they would need to completely dismantle the neck and re-attach after working on it. That would be so expensive so I could not do it. But in your case, maybe it's a small thing :)
