Here's a couple of videos of me getting the drums down for my band's album which is in progress, due for release in a month or two so it's an exclusive! :D

The band are a prog band with a commercial rock edge - that's my way of describing them. This is the best band I've ever been in with its dual challenges of quality, straight-ahead playing and also more esoteric moments which require more thought over its execution. The temptation to go over-the-top because its prog is high but I try to keep it on a tight leash because playing the song matters more than personal heroics. There's also a lot of punctuations to pick out.

The video is of the actual drum takes. But, the drums takes are comped from between 3 and 5 takes (i.e. best bits from the various takes) because I never play the same thing twice - I learn structure but wing the rest! But every take was a full performance from beginning to end. My personal goal with the album was not to 'cheat' or hide behind editing in any way - I'll have to play them live at some point anyway. It's all as played but there are some take swaps in there. You'll no doubt spot some continuity errors on the video as I couldn't eradicate them all. It's also the reason for two camera angles - it hides some of the take swaps...

Anyway, this song is called A Life In A Day (Part II). Probably the trickiest song on the album for me, all 9.5 minutes of it. There's odd-meters in there (mainly 7/8) but my main remit was to keep it fluid and not too confusing for the listener. It had to flow and some parts took some work (especially the double kick part at 2.28!) to get up-to-scratch before recording.

I hope you like it.

And this is the second song I've edited video for. Far more straight-ahead than the previous although the end part is in 7/4. The ending on this song really had me thinking out-of-the-box. It's in 7/4 but has a half time feel. Playing 'straight' time just didn't work for me. I wanted some rumbling toms to back it up but sticks sounded too harsh. So I broke out the mallets for the end part of the song and I think it really worked - kept the song bustling and big but retained the half-time feel it needed. The trickiest part was the sticking in order for my left hand to get onto the snare for the backbeat which took some single and double stroke combos to achieve.

I change to mallets after the quiet part as it was the only opportunity to do so which left me playing the last chorus on them. As I said in my previous post, it has to be played live so if I couldn't swap for the recording it was a no-go. Fortunately, I found 4 beats space I could do it so the swap happens live for the recording (along with a broken stick earlier on in the song!).

The first thirty seconds of the video is audio-only because I don't play on that part. The song is called 'Save Me'. Only the drums and guitars are the final take - all other instruments are currently guide/demo tracks.

Again, I hope you like it :)

Here's something I put together a couple of years ago. I'm an avid boater -- sailing and kayaking. This was shot sailing a boat I built around a large bay in New Jersey. I didn't create the music with the video in mind, but the two fit together just so for me.

I've been making music videos using A.I technology. This one is for "Yin and Yang" a track I made with Dan and Xavi.

Turlough Mór was one of the most powerful and significant High Kings of Ireland, and was the great, great grandson of Brian Boru. Having suppressed opposition in Connacht, Turlough, aged just 18, became King of Connacht in 1106 and gradually exerted his power and influence over Munster, Meath and Ulster. In 1121 he achieved undisputed kingship of all Ireland. It was a time of love and loss. A time when kindred blood stained the land. A time of fire and ash...

Hey friends, this is a special video because its a "single" to promote my animated movie. It's called "The Green Goddess". This collection of music is all of a spiritual nature and here I unashamedly proclaim my love for this planet.
