we've been trying so much different coffee brands since our usual brand has stop making it (or we just can't find it any more). i found this German style coffee - https://hoffskeller.com/ - so far, i'm liking this above the other dozen or so brands we've tried thus far. they say they roast it in cast iron pans/pots, don't know if that's typical of German coffee? maybe some of my German friends on here can elaborate?

i don't know, sounds funny to me, German Norwegian... that sounds to me like a clever marketing thing... but at the end of the day if it tastes good, that is all that matters. Me and Mrs. Gee, we like this coffee, as funy as it sounds it's tasty: Joerges Gorilla Super Bar Crema https://www.kaffee-joerges.de/en/kaffeesorten/gorilla-superbar-crema go figure... it was recommended to us, and now my poker buddies are all drinking it.

A large 2026 study published in JAMA (following ~132,000 people for up to 43 years) found that drinking about 2–3 cups of caffeinated coffee per day was linked to a meaningfully lower risk of dementia and better cognitive function. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/2844764
Key findings from that study:People with higher caffeinated coffee intake had an ~18% lower dementia risk compared to those who drank little or none.
The sweet spot was around 2–3 cups of coffee (or 1–2 cups of tea) daily — benefits were most pronounced there, showing a nonlinear (not "more is always better") relationship.
@Helmut: Decaf coffee did not show the same protective association, pointing to caffeine (or other compounds in caffeinated drinks) as a key factor.
Similar benefits appeared for cognitive performance and slower decline.
This aligns with some earlier studies too (e.g., midlife consumption of 3–5 cups linked to lower late-life dementia risk in older data), though results across research aren't perfectly uniform — some meta-analyses show weaker or mixed effects overall.
Important caveats:Association, not proven causation — Coffee drinkers might have other healthy habits, and the study adjusted for many factors but can't rule out everything.
Benefits appear strongest at moderate levels. Very high intake doesn't necessarily add more protection and could have downsides (sleep issues, anxiety, etc.).
Individual factors matter: genetics, overall diet, exercise, blood pressure, and whether you tolerate caffeine well.
