Hey GemmyF.
Good to hear from you. Promotion of wikiloops is a good and worthwhile topic that deserves its own thread as there would be lots of opinions about this. Nobody would be looking for that discussion within this thread. Pose the question either in this section or under open mic at the blue Iguana.
Just off the top of my head (under that ridiculously over sized hat you gave me): It would take a very open and forward thinking university teacher/professor to embrace a concept like wikiloops. The ivory tower is not always open to new or threatening ideas. It's based on pedagogy. You get your students to jump through the specified hoops in order to get your grades and piece of paper. Even (or especially?) improvisation is a taught subject with heavy emphasis on the 1950s mainstream jazz style and just playing “standards”. Wikiloops (IMHO) would certainly be of enormous benefit to most music students, but unlikely to fit into a curriculum. I'd love to see a university embrace wikiloops and be wrong about this as that would throw open a door that is generally shut.
Here's a bit of a nasty generalization: Those who can DO. Those who can't TEACH. The world of arts teaching is filed with those who couldn't make it (let's face it, that's the vast majority out there). What they teach is how to become teachers of the same failed paradigm and not how to be creative. I know that that's a rough thing to say, but it's easy to verify. If the academic method made people more creative then those with a PhD would all be top artists and musicians. Can you name a famous artist or musician with a PhD?

A good salesman with a great product can easily break paradigms
but you're right it should be a strategy that is talked about among the whole WLoops community.
I have talked with some professors already, yet had no product with me to wet their appetite with.
Next time I will.
SOON. Went once!;) but classes were out!

Guys, don't get me wrong now - what Gemmy is adressing above is totally worth a debate of its own, but we'll get totally lost if we dont seperate topics by opening new threads.
Ideally, we should open two threads on this, one for the discussion / brainstorming part, and a second one collecting approved methods of getting the word out about wikiloops, as inspiration to others.
Seeing that I'm currently totally busy with the initial topic of this thread here, I will not take the lead in this right now, one thing at a time kinda thinking here...

I've had some of the feelings described by Wade when searching or classifying a tune before uploading. I've usually delt w/ it by doing it under ''World'', over simplifying yes but that's what i felt was practical..
As for time signatures, beats, etc.. it's out of sheer ignorance i don't, as frustrating as it will be to others for which i apologise : i have the crappiest memory & too often it's happened coming up w/ a riff & loose it while ascertaining what tempo it is, etc… all my playing/''composing'' being done by ear, feel & playing as i go.
So far Oliv's suggestion on nº14 seems to me like DEFINITELY a step in a good direction :
There is such a myriad of instruments, genres & sub genres + everything else, that if doing it ''too accurately'' the dialog boxes would read like Yellow Pages phone books ?
An aspect i personally feel is important is to keep the loops interface as uncluterred as possible.
''Too acurate'' would make me NOT want to go near any of it - how many would feel the same ?
As for Wade's proposed ''Other'', i tend to agree with it in principle but wasn't aware of the difficulties it would later cause in searches, etc.. as pointed out.
Rather than going nuts offering all sorts of instruments wouldn't it work if just grouping instruments by genres ( wind, percussive, stringed.. ) & then leave it to the uploader to tag the track with the exact instrument name ? & couldn't this sort of approach be used towards genres as well ? A basic list & rely on tags ?
Last but not least, after the peek preview of the beta wikiloops we had at Steinfeld i'm SO looking forward to experience it.. ;)
Cheers guys
