in reply to niltons suggestion:
The concept to take average-listening-time into account for the rating system does indeed make sense in a way.
On the tchnical end, you would have to implement something that keeps track of listening time by calling up a script every X seconds to mark "I'm still listening" - a scenario would be:
1st: You visit a jams page
2nd: after X seconds, a second page on wikiloops is requested in the background to document that the user is still there...
this would have to happen on an intervalled basis, so someone listening thru a five minute track would actually cause one hit to a full page and lets say six hits to the statistic generation script (the display/refresh of new messages works similar, btw). Bottom line is, such a stats system does increase the server load by a huge number, which is the most important reason I have not installed something like that so far.

As with any statistic move, there is pro and con scenarios, and besides the server load detail, I'm not absolutely sure if playing duration really is an indicator for a tracks quality. If we had such a system, people who pass by a track without listening for long would lead to the track getting voted down - if someone likes to skip thru the latest contributions, he or she would lead a devastating trail of "bad ratings" unintentionally - leaving a track prior to having heard all of it does not really say something about the tracks quality, so I imagine it might turn out the "longlisten"-factor will not be as precise as one might imagine. I might do some experiments some time, but would not expect to be able to influence the general attention/thumb ratio much this way, which is much more dependent on user behaviour than on the systems setup in the end.

As a musician and composer it is important for me to share the music I create. Wikiloops is a wonderful opportunity to offer my creations to others. Besides that, I appreciate that others musicians and singers join me.

When I do a show on stage, I don't seek for thumbs or applause. I just want that people who come to listen to my songs share the feelings and emotions I try to deliver. If it works, I feel it and it is my reward.

Artist here do join informal groups with the same interests. It is done naturally. And people who come on wikiloops to listen to music also join these informal groups. All that is also done naturally.

Besides that, we find different levels of skill here. Just remember that the site is opened to everyone who wants to jam. Some jams are good, some are bad but the effort is always there.
I used to be a good golf player and I stopped playing because of the stress of the scorecard. One bad hole on #2 and I knew I had scrapped my game. Now when I play golf, it is forbidden to bring a scorecard. A good shot and I am happy. I forget the bad shots and I continue to play and have fun with friends. The analogy is the same for me on wikiloops.

I am really happy when musicians here leave me a message of encouragement. The music I do now is much better than the music I was doind at the beginning of wikiloops. Not everything is good but I think I made some nice songs in occasions. The important thing is that betters musicians helped me getting better.

I am not really interesting in the number of thumbs I get. The only thing I know is that there are 126 332 listenings of my songs on wikiloops up to now. This mean to me that many people are interested in what I do and appreciate the music. And I am interested to share with them.

I think that it is better to leave things as they are now. I would note like to be the one to decide what is good or bad, better or worse.

Have a nice day all of you and a thousand thumbs to all of you.

Bravo, ROBJOL & Rickplayer!
Let's never forget, that this is a site for jamming.
My experience with jamming:
People meet for making music. Someone starts and the other participients join in. The sense of making this is "making music".
Of course any participient will be happy, getting a grin from another particpient (similar to a thumb) and he/she will be even more happy to get a hug or some friendly words from other participients (similar to a comment). If occasionally an audience is present, every participient will also be happy to get a grin or an applause from anyone in the audience.
But this never was the reason for me, to join a jam.

I mean this is a site for music lovers and not a competition site for being part of the European song contest or any other of these perverted institutions.

Let's enjoy it as it is cause it is just fun. Enjoy every jam you may be part of. Enjoy any comment, any thumb and any listener. But le's stop looking jealously to thumbs, comments of listeners of oher musicians.
Thanks to everyone who is joining this party!

I a thought on the technical side (not actually knowing the inner workings) Wouldn't it be possible to have a client-side script measure playing time and report back to the server?
That way server load would hardly increase
