December News
Hey there, friends of wikiloops :)
I have been quite busy in the wikiloops engine room lately, today I'll interrupt my coding session for a moment to share some recent news from the headquarters.
As anyone reading this will have noticed, wikiloops is holding a "make ends meet"-funding campaign for the first time this year.
Let me share some details on this before moving on to nicer topics:
First, let me openly admit that the whole campaigns design is strongly inspired by what the wikipedia has been successfully doing for quite a few years now (they ask for quite different amounts of cash, have a look!).
It is not a comfortable position to have to ask for support in such an offensive way - and to be honest, I guess few people will be as happy as I'll be to let the rally end on december 31th 2015 or earlier, should we meet the target ahead of time.
Personally, I don't really like the looks of the big "please support" banner, and I can imagine some may look at the current state of the rally and think:
"ouch, they'll hardly make it!"
I believe we will make it.
I will issue the next "wikiloops transparency report" come january, and instead of begging for support when looking at the past years result, I felt it might be wiser to take the opposite approach and try to round up the needed funds with the current campaign.
I'll stretch to make ends meet, the only difference to previous years is that you can see it visualized on our funding bar... if it hurts your eyes, feel free to join the supporters - you will not have to look at it afterwards :)
I would like to thank all the people who have chosen to support wikiloops - you will have noticed the "supporter-statements" which they have left - thanks for that and all the backup expressed there!
One of the rather technical reasons for the growing wikiloops budget needs can be easily understood from the following pie-chart:

The needed server expansion is well on the way, so you don't have to expect a "uploading is disabled, server is full" message anytime soon - big thanks to all the quiet monthly supporters who have been backing that!
Now, let's turn to some more uplifting news than the never ending budget quest - in case you have not noticed, our public playlist section has undergone a quite nice visual update - check out the new "OneWorldRadio"-player sometime:

The visual concept to this is something I had designed in early 2015, when me and a small group of 'loopers were thinking quite hard how to improve the listeners experience on wikiloops.
The radio player is aiming to show some older gems from the wikiloops music collection to new visitors (please share if you like!),
but we have also included a quite interesting channel called "Voices of the month" which features recent tracks with vocals.
Big credit goes to Uloisius, who actually spent a few weeks coming up with an automatism to create that list.
As the last month of the year has just started, I'm hurrying up to prepare the last update of the 'loops for this year... it is coming along quite nicely, you'll see in a little while!
Have a nice start into december, and happy jamming on wikiloops.com :)

Great to hear about the latest developments Dick, and for all the effort you put it. Would that radio be easily embeddable into other sites?

Dick
No, sorry - it consists of quite a lot of single data pieces (its not one flash application, but a mix of html5, JS and CSS), so its not embeddable easyly. wikiloops does not offer any embeddable players, because that might cause quite a lot of traffic while bringing too little feedback to the musicians. We may get there one day, but I have some doubts about this for now.
+1
