wikiloops sticker give-away

Don't you feel your instrument case is missing one more sticker?
Good news, there are still some left, and I will be glad to send them out your way - all you will need to do is send me your street adress via wiki-message or email to info [at] wikiloops.com.
This has been on my to-do-list for a long time, and since I have been engaged in some kind of end-of-the-year offensive, there we go!
Of course I'd love to know about wikiloops stickers being carried to jams all around the world, so don't hesitate to order some, and feel free to post a pic of your "upgraded" case here in the forum or on the wikiloops facebook page.
Let me give you a brief summary of what else is happening at wikiloops headquarters these days:
As some will remember, we had some real worries about the server capacities a few weeks ago, so a lot of effort went into optimizing wikiloops performance to keep the server cost as low as anyhow possible - a lot has been done, but lets face it, with a growth rate of above 100% per year, we will have to face rising server power needs no matter what. There is limitations to what a single machine can serve, so gathering funds for server upgrades shall stay high on the priorities list for some time to come.
I have started to carefuly contact some producers of musical gear, investigating if there is interest to appear as an official sponsor of wikiloops. This is a whole new field of "job" to me, so a lot of thought and time went into the right presentation of our 'loops here.
Besides this, I have been taking care of two more very unmusical tasks. Whenever the end of the year gets closer, I have to take care of some kind of tax report about wikiloops, as demanded by our local government.
I know it will sound very ridiculous to anyone not familar with german beaurocracy, but I have seriously spent days and good money to fill out a lot of forms about the globally acting company that never sold anything but keeps receiving strange payments from all around the globe - known to you as wikiloops.com. It feels insane to me as well, but there is no way around it, so someone has to do it.
The second task of the absurd-feeling kind also adressed a problem about wikiloops Wade adressed at the wiki-meet in Urft:
Up to this day, wikiloops did not have any security fallback for the not completely unlikely case that I may become temporarily unavailable at some point.
Looking at all the work that has been invested, and the huge amount of fun wikiloops has brought to many of us, it just does deserve a better security background to make sure it can go on independent of just one guy.
At this point, wikiloops is simply lacking a budget to assure there will always be someone able to keep maintaining the project.
What could be done, and also required some hard thinking and quite some working hours, was setting up a security fallback guide paper including all relevant information needed to be able to continue running wikiloops without my presence.
Setting up a fool-proof fallback for wikiloops that will guarantee we can go on, regardless of any fire burning my harddrives or me getting run over by a bus is another one of the high-priority items of fall 2014.
Of course, I had to code a little bit as well ;)
One major improvement that had been dwelling on the to-do-list since april was a reworked administration interface, which allows the wikiloops moderators to keep an overview - something really helpfull considering we have up to 100 new uploads and short of a thousand comments a day by now.
Last, but not least I am happy to announce I am in good faith I will be able to present a final interface upgrade for 2014 within the next week - there always were a handfull of changes I have been tinkering with, and which I could finally get to work. I believe you'll like them - I will post some details about the wikiloops 7.0 update soon!
For today, let me end with the stats and a reminder to order yourself a sticker or two ;)

Hi Dick,
To acheiveall those tasks, I think it is time to consider an annual contribution for members (musicians and listeners could be different contributions). I think that it this time, before starting a new year of operation, to discuss the subject. You could make a survey by addressing personal messages to all members. +0

Hey Rob - we actually had a pretty lenghty discussion about this topic with over 40 wikiloops members earlier this year, before the "supporting membership" was introduced - which is basicly an annual contribution system.
Seperating the listeners from the musicians is pretty much impossible - we all started as listeners, and a concept of "pay if you dont upload stuf" will only lead to nonsense uploads in the end... we have discussed a lot of ideas which lead to the august update, I will focus on sponsoring partners next... its a hard road, but there are still some options I'd prefer very much before charging musicians who share their music with us, keeping out students etc etc.
Of course, this all strongly depends on peoples awareness that I am not asking for donations for the fun of it... time will tell :) +0

Hi wikiloops, I'll be making my small donation soon. I would like to contribute more often. I get so much from this site that it's only just that I do what I can to help support something I'm so passionate about. I have been aware that due to the costs and amount of work it takes to keep this project going, that the time may be drawing near that we may have to contribute more financialy. So I have prepared myself for that day when Dick has to send us a message regarding a monthly or annual fee. To me it's worth every penny. I'd rather keep on jamming with all of you instead of going back to just jamming on my own again. I've briefly looked into kickstarter.com as a donation solution but I'm not too sure if it would a long term solution. Has anyone here had any experience with kickstarter? Dick, I'm more than willing to decrease my song catalog if that helps at all. I am grateful for you positive attitude towards continuing wikiloops in the manner that you have. You are a man who stays true to his convictions and I'm excited about the future of this site including this year's updates. Your friend Peter V

hey Peter,
thanks for your kind thoughts!
I'll do my very best to be able to offer wikiloops free of charge & donation based, and there is still some things left to try - we will have to see how things develop.
No need to delete any tracks, the storage space is not the costly factor - its 1800 hungry listeners per day letting the server glow :) +2
