Regarding your loss of a track, although not familiar w/ Audacity, try to get used to make a save every time you add something…
It happened to me a few times in GarageBand ( talk about uber frustrating !!.. ) i did & it only takes a few seconds extra plus of course once you save it, it's like going out w/ an umbrella : it never rains !! ;) +2

It's not that Audacity crashed. I saved the project, but when I reopened it at home, the alto track just wasn't there... +3
