The War of the Words

There's a new poem inside of me.
It wants to get out,
But I'm not ready to set it free.

Similes, metaphors, and alliterations,
A bouquet of lively images
All banging against one another,
Shouting at me
To commit them to paper.

But I know if I let them out,
There will always be
Competition,
Imperfection,
Which phrase is stronger?

Could I have done a better job,
With fewer words here and there,
Maybe transposed
A line or two?

But I do nothing,
Rendering an impasse,
While I wait for the words to get louder,
To command my full attention,

Until I can no longer hold them back,
And I let them escape,
Stumbling and shouting
From my tired fingers
To let them find their way
Onto a fresh new page.
